What happened?

A group of walkers from the Ulitarra Conservation Society drove from the campsite at Dalmorton to the intersection of Narrow Neck Trail and Old Glen Innes Grafton Road on Saturday 14th February to walk to Tommy’s Lookout for morning tea. The group walked to the lookout and following morning tea regrouped at about 12 o’clock and discovered one of the walkers was not present. Following a thorough search of the area we decided to walk back to the cars in case he had returned to his. On reaching the cars we discovered he was not there so a group drove a 4wd back up to Tommy’s Lookout (while the rest remained with the cars) to do another search and try to contact 000 as there is virtually no mobile phone coverage due to the remote location. Following a reasonably unsuccessful attempt to ring 000 and tell the operator of our predicament the PLB was activated at approx. 3pm. Two trail bike riders came past so we stopped them and asked them to help look for the walker together with a property owner on a quad bike. Police then arrived, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter dispatched and SES personnel arrived to conduct a search and paramedics also came but stayed at the location of our cars as they didn’t have a 4wd to negotiate the road up to the lookout. On Sunday Polair joined the search together with more police, ses, volunteers services and fire brigade personnel. Following a night in the bush and missing for 28 hours the walker was found by police in fairly good condition for his ordeal late on Sunday afternoon.

Words of wisdom

It always pays off to do a second search.

She came over to help me back to my tent where my PLB was. On the way there I briefly fainted from the pain, but luckily I was caught before falling down completely.
