What happened?

We were hiking on main trail on a little known side trail that followed a stream up through 7 waterfalls. on the 4th waterfall Vanessa Slipped and tumbled down the face of a 60 foot waterfall landing unconscious in shallow pool. Cell phone reception was sketchy and we couldn’t get continuous service with 911.  I turned on my PLB.  When we could finally get a strong enough signal. SAR informed us that they had gotten our coordinates from the coast guard because of the PLB and that a helicopter was on the way.  It arrived 10 minutes later.  Vanessa was taken to hospital and released 7 hours later with 2 broken wrists and 21 stitches across her face.  It would have been impossible for her to hike or us to carry her out.

Words of wisdom

Know your skill set and always pay attention when your hiking on sketchy terrain

Thank you note

I’ve carried a personal locator beacon for years, its often been dubbed the most expensive piece of equipment I never use.  After using it, I cant imagine going out without carrying it. I have banged it up and knocked it around over the years I’ve had it, it still worked like a charm
