What happened?

I was riding my mountain bike alone on a dirt road in the Tonto National Forest. The bike started to slide, I put out my right foot, but it caught on a rock. I went down and when I looked, my foot was 90 degrees from where it should have been, clearly broken. I crawled out from under the bike and off to the side of the road. Not knowing how long it would be before someone might come by (it was a weekday), I got my ResQLink from my backpack, deployed the antenna and pushed the rescue button. As it happened, a couple came by on an ATV about 15 minutes later. They were retired police officers and used to emergencies. The wife stayed with me while the husband went back to get cell phone service and help. I turned off the PLB as soon as he left but in the short time it was broadcasting, the signal got through and a rescue was underway. By the time he got cell service and called 911, they already knew who I was and exactly where I was. An ambulance showed up about 1 hour after the accident and I was soon in an ER getting treatment. The PLB really expedited my rescue, eliminating miscommunication and getting me the help I needed.

Words of wisdom

Let someone know where you’re going, put it in writing as well, and get a PLB, especially if you venture out alone.

Thank you note

I was amazed, after the fact, at how quickly and efficiently the PLB worked. It was a real confidence builder.
