What happened?

A couple of our lady friends had decided to go for a day hike in Glenorchy Queenstown. At the last minute, one of the ladies couldn’t go, so Karen herself decided she would go on her own.

We did advise her this wasn’t a good idea, but she was going to go anyway as she had taken time off work. My wife said, “okay then, if you’re going to go, please take my husband’s locator beacon with you.”

She wasn’t going to, but we made her take it anyway.

On that Tuesday morning, my wife rang me that she’d got a phone call that my locator beacon had been activated. According to the team on the phone, Karen had fallen down a bank, breaking her ankle and damaging her leg.

The rescue helicopter was there within about half an hour to save her. Karen had already started to get cold, wearing all her clothes that she had with her. I don’t know what would’ve happened if she did not have the ACR ResQLink 400 beacon with her as she lives alone, and it would’ve been very late before anybody realized she hadn’t made it home.

Words of wisdom

Always carry your personal locator beacon on you. You never know when you may need it.

Thank you note

Thank you to the rescue teams and ACR for helping to save a friend.

From Adventure to Emergency: How a PLB Helped Save My Friend’s Life in the Wilderness

Unfortunately, things took a turn when my friend hit a hidden stump, launching him into the air. The impact resulted in a broken femur and a dislocated shoulder. He was in excruciating pain, and with only a few hours of daylight left, I knew we wouldn’t be able to get him out on our own.

However, near the bottom of the spur, my knee gave way again, this time with intense pain, making it difficult to move. Fortunately, we had already navigated the steepest section and were close to the hut. With my friend taking on a lot of my pack weight, we managed to reach the hut before nightfall.
