What happened?

We were mountain biking in the Poulter Valley of Arthurs Pass National Park New Zealand when  I fell off my bike on steep rough ground. My knee received a deep puncture wound, with excruciating pain going up my inner leg to my groin. I was unable to bend the knee thus unable to continue riding the bike with  approximately 9km with some grunty Grade 3  to return back to our vehicle.  A second person had fallen off her bike an hour earlier and was unable to ride the bike but able to push it.   Considering the bigger picture, it was decided to request  help, luckily a passing biker had an ACR Resqlink.  The decision was not taken lightly as all members of our party are experienced outdoor people in a range of outdoor activities with a perfect safety record.

Thank you note

My name’s Tom, I bike pack in NZ a lot with my best mate, Owen. Weirdly we both ended up doing this track with our families on the same day. My family and I finished as Owen was about to start with his 7 year old boy. I gave him my PLB as it was getting on in the day and I knew that they may end up biking in the dark to the hut. When I got the call from the Rescue Coordination Centre saying my beacon had been activated I was so glad I had passed it on.

We were traveling along the track down a steep slippery section when my feet went from under me, sending me sliding down and my foot impacted with a tree trunk causing a significant injury to my ankle. My ankle was completely broken, and my foot attached to my leg only by tissue.
