What happened?

I had nearly finished a 4 day hike with a group of friends from my home town. We had had spectacular weather and views for the whole walk.

Then, only 90 minutes before the end, I stepped off a swing bridge and due to the uneven ground, the way I fell and the weight of my backpack I dislocated my hip. I was in immediate pain and unable to move. Fortunately my friends were able to access my ResQLink 400 beacon and set it off.  The medic had to be winched down as the helicopter could not land.

It took quite a while to stabilise me, get me pain free and into a place where I could be winched into the helicopter. Then it was off to hospital where it took 3 attempts to reduce my hip and get it back into it’s rightful position. Such a relief.

Deborah Being Air-Lifted Out

I will always be so grateful to the Search and Rescue people, and friends, their care and support was amazing.

All is good now, just some rehabilitation before anymore outdoor adventures.

Words of wisdom

Always carry a PLB and have it easily accessible whatever you are doing. The simplest of activities can easily become critical.

Thank you note

I was so pleased to have purchased my PLB and have it with me when I needed it. Thanks to the ACR Team.

Rapid Response: The Heroic Efforts Behind a Wilderness Rescue Mission

Walking through Pam's Path, a narrow track with loose stones, Holly stepped over a large rock, causing her left foot to slip sideways down the slope. Hearing a crack and feeling pain immediately, she knew her ankle was in trouble. With no way for Mal and Isy to assist her on the narrow path, and Holly unable to put any weight on her injured foot, we utilized walkie-talkie contact with Rebecca, our host at Kawakawa Station. Rebecca phoned 111, and upon advice, we set off our ResQLink 400 PLB as we were in a location requiring a helicopter rescue.
