What happened?

We were fishing for sharks about 2 miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico in 30′ of water. We were anchored up and a big wave came over the Stern of the boat and because we have a notched transom it overwhelmed the batteries and bilge pump. Within 45 seconds we had a foot of water in the back of the boat with not much time to think I grabbed my phone and my PLB and we put our life jackets on. It only took about a minute for the boat to fully flip and before we knew it we were floating in our own shark chum..Thank god I had my plb and my phone I immedistely hit the emergency on button and started to call 911. I finally got signal with them and was able to get into contact with local authorities. The Plb was able to give the fire department our exact location. After about an hour of floating and with night dusk coming we spotted the goodland fire department boat. We were saved!

I am forever grateful to all first responders the coast guard, air force and especially the Goodland fire department!

Survivor Stories

Rapid Response: The Heroic Efforts Behind a Wilderness Rescue Mission

Walking through Pam's Path, a narrow track with loose stones, Holly stepped over a large rock, causing her left foot to slip sideways down the slope. Hearing a crack and feeling pain immediately, she knew her ankle was in trouble. With no way for Mal and Isy to assist her on the narrow path, and Holly unable to put any weight on her injured foot, we utilized walkie-talkie contact with Rebecca, our host at Kawakawa Station. Rebecca phoned 111, and upon advice, we set off our ResQLink 400 PLB as we were in a location requiring a helicopter rescue.
