What happened?

I had nearly finished a 4 day hike with a group of friends from my home town. We had had spectacular weather and views for the whole walk.

Then, only 90 minutes before the end, I stepped off a swing bridge and due to the uneven ground, the way I fell and the weight of my backpack I dislocated my hip. I was in immediate pain and unable to move. Fortunately my friends were able to access my ResQLink 400 beacon and set it off.  The medic had to be winched down as the helicopter could not land.

It took quite a while to stabilise me, get me pain free and into a place where I could be winched into the helicopter. Then it was off to hospital where it took 3 attempts to reduce my hip and get it back into it’s rightful position. Such a relief.

Deborah Being Air-Lifted Out

I will always be so grateful to the Search and Rescue people, and friends, their care and support was amazing.

All is good now, just some rehabilitation before anymore outdoor adventures.

Words of wisdom

Always carry a PLB and have it easily accessible whatever you are doing. The simplest of activities can easily become critical.

Thank you note

I was so pleased to have purchased my PLB and have it with me when I needed it. Thanks to the ACR Team.

A Girlfriend's gift, a Viral video, and 5 lives saved: How a last-minute PLB played a critical role off the coast of Mississippi

As the boat sank, Connor quickly activated the beacon. “I saw it react and then went into the water,” said Connor, noting the reassuring green light indicating a satellite fix. With only the PLB and no accessible flares, the men tried to stay close and check on each other. “By hour three, we were all cramping, and it didn’t look good,” said Dusty.

Rain and Wind Test Hikers on Stewart Island, Helicopter Rescue Ensues

As we started to move faster along the beach, using a hiking pole each for stability, my brother saw me disappear over a line of boulders on the beach. About two minutes later, he found me lying face down in the rocks. I recall waking up with my head jammed between two boulders, bleeding from the scalp and temple, with a hole in my trousers.
