A Life-Saving Miracle Encounter on Brewster Glacier Thanks to ACR's ResQLink 400 Personal Locator Beacon
Posted on September 26, 2023 by Alison
Tom realized the hiker was in serious trouble as soon as he reached him. The hikers friend had tried to help him stand up but he was in terrible pain. He had slipped about 3 meters off a vertical ledge and then slid along more rocks. He activated my PLB ResQLink 400. The injured hiker, Martin and his friend were also on a day hike and had very little in the way of extra warm cloths or food and no PLB. We were well out of cell phone coverage. Although he stayed calm, we could see he was cooling down lying on the rocks. We were worried he would go into shock. He had smashed his elbow and had severe lower back pain.
PLB AIDS BACKPACKER AFTER FALL LEAVES HER INJURED IN THE FOREST

I tripped on a root and fell hard. I knew immediately that something was wrong with my lower right leg near the ankle, but I thought I could carry on. I improvised a brace using a knee support band and attempted to hike further, leaning hard on my hiking pole. I only made it 50 feet or so up the trail before it became clear that I wasn't going to be able to get myself out. I thought about crawling back to the middle trailhead we'd passed, but I couldn't bend my foot or ankle due to the pain

I don’t know what would’ve happened if she did not have the ACR ResQLink 400 beacon with her as she lives alone, and it would’ve been very late before anybody realized she hadn’t made it home.

I took out my PLB and pushed the button. We also sent SOS messages via the Garmin Inreach to my emergency contact who were passing that info to SAR and initiating a Search and Rescue.
Hiker Activates PLB to Evade Pneumonia
Posted on April 24, 2023 by Glen
Two more days of hiking through challenging terrain was required to reach our planned exit point from the trail. Peter did not think I could safely make it, given my balance problems and breathing difficulties, and was concerned that I might end up with pneumonia if we stayed longer in the hut.
