What happened?

My friends and I were out on one of our many snowmobiling adventures. We are advanced riders who regularly tackle remote, challenging terrain far from easy access points.

On this particular day, conditions couldn’t have been better. The snow was fresh and untracked, and we explored one of our favorite secret spots—an area known for its pristine powder and breathtaking views. It was the kind of ride we all dream of smooth, fast, and exciting. However, that perfect moment took a sudden and painful turn.

While navigating a particularly tricky stretch. One of my friends hit a hidden stump that was buried beneath the deep snow. The force of the impact launched him into the air, and he landed with a horrifying thud. I immediately knew something was seriously wrong. He was in excruciating pain, unable to move, with a broken femur and dislocated shoulder.

We were miles from the nearest road, and with daylight rapidly fading, I realized there was no way we could get him out on our own. The terrain was far too treacherous for a ground rescue, and the lack of cellular service in this remote area limited our options. I knew we needed help, and we needed it fast.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, I activated my ResQLink 400 PLB, which I always carry with me in the backcountry, and tended to my injured friend.

A short while later, Search and Rescue arrived via helicopter. Thankfully, we were near a clearing, allowing them to transport him quickly.

He received emergency surgery that same night.

There was no cellular service, and a ground rescue would have been impossible due to the challenging terrain. I’m incredibly grateful for the beacon I’ve carried all these years and the fast response of the Search and Rescue team.

Words of wisdom

With the satellite technology available today, you would be foolish to travel remote areas without a PLB.
