What happened?

We rode our SEADOO jet skis around 110 kilometers around Whitsunday Island, visiting Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet in conditions ranging from smooth water to rough chop. Near CID Island, I noticed a warning sign about sharks and decided to increase speed to move away from the area. Within a kilometer, and about one kilometer offshore, my engine suddenly screamed and then failed completely. I quickly realized my ski was taking on water.

My companion’s ski was also taking on water, but his engine was still running. He was able to reach the beach and ground his ski safely. At 1:00 pm, with only one bar of phone signal, I called the Australian emergency services and activated my ResQLink 400, which I permanently carry attached to my lifejacket. Police Rescue were dispatched, and Marine Rescue Queensland was engaged to assist. I also managed to text a friend on Hamilton Island, who headed out to help.

Within fifteen minutes, my ski had filled with water and tipped me into the sea. I spent about fifteen minutes in shark active waters, swimming beside the ski until my friend arrived and rescued me. He towed the ski to the same beach where my companion had grounded.

Police Rescue arrived about an hour after activation, and Marine Rescue Queensland arrived roughly two and a half hours later. We were safely back on trailers by 7:30 pm.

I have carried a PLB on my lifejacket for ten years. On this day, it proved invaluable. I encourage every jet ski rider to carry a personal locator beacon. When things go wrong offshore, help needs to be on the way immediately.

Words of wisdom

I have carried a PLB on my lifejacket for approximately 10 years, and it is comforting to know that it successfully orchestrated our rescue by AMSA, Police Rescue, and Marine Rescue. I encourage all my Jetski friends to attach a PLB to their Lifejackets.

Thank you note

Thanks to ACR for the reassurance of the PLB, Police rescue, and Marine Rescue Queensland for an awesome job of rescuing us on this day.
