I was with the Wednesday group of the Manawatu Tramping and Skiing Club on a day tramp   around the Six Discs/Ohau River track area. On a very steep, muddy and slippery section of the track Anita slipped and trapped her foot in a hole – she said she knew it was broken. We were among thick tall trees on a steep slope (about 25 degrees) steeper in places. There was no way a helicopter could even hover there, We knew there was a clearing down by the river and we also knew the nearest cell phone coverage was 1 and a half hours away at the car park. Our injured tramper felt she could scoot down the hill so I volunteered to go down ahead to the clearing and set off my PLB calling the rescue helicopter while the men helped her down. She was amazingly stoic to slide and crawl such a distance when in obvious pain.

Due to the difficult access the Intensive Care Paramedic, was winched down and together they were winched back to the helicopter and flown to Palmerston North Hospital for further treatment for a severely messed up broken leg near the ankle.
