After overcoming the most challenging sections and crossing potentially dangerous rivers, I was cruising, theoretically less than an hour away from the next hut. However, an unnoticed hole under the brush and a loud pop led to a quick change.

One of the students held the PLB, and we communicated to check if the signal light was flashing. I placed emergency blankets over parent A and a couple of student jackets around him for support. I stayed with my arm supporting his neck, not moving him, suspecting he had broken his femur on one side and either his hip or femur on the other. Later, we found he had broken his femur and dislocated his hip on the opposite side.

We expected her to get up quickly and laugh at herself. But that didn’t happen. She stayed lying on the floor and told us her arm was really sore, and we quickly realized it was probably broken. She was groaning in obvious pain, experiencing hot and cold flashes and felt very nauseous.

SAR made contact with me (via blowing whistles) at 10:15pm and we walked 2 ½ hours out. I was surprisingly relaxed, apart from being upset about Frankie, I had full confidence in my PLB and knew they would get to me as soon as they could. (And I knew Frankie would do her best too). The team that rescued me were amazing, and were impressed with how prepared I was, and I was actually a bit proud of myself for being so prepared

As the temperature dropped around 11:50 pm, and the rain and wind picked up, I began showing signs of hypothermia. Fearing that no one would come before dawn in this weather, I made the tough decision to start walking when I had regained some energy.

By early evening, close to exhaustion, shivering from the cold and soaked through, the realization hit me that I was in serious trouble and at risk of injury if I fell. Then, to my immense relief, I activated my PLB.

In the end, we learned that David had a partial cervical fracture. Calling for rescue turned out to be the right decision, and we were glad to get him out of the challenging situation. Though our mission faced setbacks, we remained resilient, knowing that safety comes first in the great outdoors.

Concerned about Cat's condition, I thought about spending a cold and hungry night to revitalize her for the trip back. But then I decided to call for help instead and activated my ACR ResQLink 400 PLB. Within an hour, a helicopter arrived, and we signaled with bright-colored items. The crew quickly got us to safety, and we were relieved to be warm and dry, heading home for a hot pie. I'm grateful for the rescue team's quick response and relieved to be back after a challenging adventure

The once crystal-clear waters turned murky and swift, and the weather, instead of improving as we had hoped, took a turn for the worse. Faced with this unexpected weather shift and the now treacherous river crossings, we made the decision to wait, believing the conditions would improve. In hindsight, this proved to be a mistake.
