We were about 20 miles from port with thunderstorms visible in the distance—a concerning situation, to say the least. Despite our best efforts to troubleshoot the motor, we couldn’t get it running again. Attempts to contact help via radio also failed. Knowing we needed immediate assistance, we activated our GlobalFix V6 EPIRB.

Standing up was nearly impossible, and putting weight on my left leg wasn’t working. I crawled about fifty feet to the trail, but by 6:30 pm, I realized there was no way I’d make it out on my own.

Two of my sons immediately recognized how serious the injury was and fashioned a tourniquet from a dock line, placing it on my upper left thigh to prevent blood loss. My other son activated the GlobalFix V6 EPIRB and used the UHF radio to call for assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard and the Florida Department of Fish and Wildlife.

My brother was pinned under the boat inside an air pocket and my father was swept away by the current. I too was in the water attempting to help my father and saw my neon green ACR Aqua Link Personal Locator Beacon float out of the boat.

I didn't have enough time to get a distress out and had to climb through the wheelhouse window and popped up in the water beside the upturned hull of my fishing vessel.

With the cost of boats as expensive as they are, the cost of an EPIRB is merely pennies compared to that. The next time you decide to go out fishing or boating offshore keep that in mind. It's not only your life that's at stake, it's anyone you decide to take with you.

The ACR PLB made this incredibly uncomfortable and dangerous situation a lot easier to deal with and allowed for critical time to be saved by the Coast Guard while trying to locate us.
