At one point, after taking multiple 4-foot breaking waves over the bow, center, and stern, we hit a wave that lifted the entire boat out of the water, leaving us airborne for what felt like an eternity, though it was probably only 3-4 seconds. For the first time in my offshore career, we were completely at the mercy of the sea, immobile and helpless.

The adventure took a dramatic turn on February 24, near New Zealand, when a powerful storm struck with winds reaching 40/50 knots and waves towering between 10 to 15 meters. Trapped inside my boat, a massive wave crashed, flipping it over, breaking parts, and flooding it. Despite the chaos, I was fortunate to escape with minor injuries – some shoulder pain and a bump on the head.

They continued making way on 1 motor as they constantly bailed working to keep the boat moving and afloat. After several more hours, the Coast Guard dispatched a 47-foot cutter to escort or tow them in, if needed. Once reaching the sinking vessel, (51 miles from shore) the Coast Guard instructed the captain to stop and attempted to put a pump on the sinking vessel. However, the vessel which had taken on too much water capsized and sank within minutes.

Stranded about 630km from Kangaroo Island in the Great Australian Bight, Xavier faced a communication blackout. To signal for help, he activated his ResQLink AIS PLB Friday evening. Unfortunately, during the collision, Xavier sustained injuries to his head and neck. Making the strenuous situation ever more difficult.

I grabbed my Rapid Ditch Bag, the EPIRB, a VHF, and a lot of water while I headed to the life raft. As I entered the raft, the Sailing vessel sunk and the connecting wire between the life raft and the boat pulled me slightly under water. At this moment I was frightened to death. But luckily, the predetermined breaking point was triggered so the life raft rose to the surface as the boat sank.

One minute later the boat rolled over on her port side and quickly sank with all lights on. We felt the suction as she journeyed to her final resting place.

Three years ago there were close to zero PLBs in Pohnpei. Thanks to a program with many donors and the Pohnpei Surf Club, the ACR dealer in Pohnpei, we were able to have around 300 boats equipped with ResQLink 400s.

Exhausted and badly bruised; wet, and very anxious about going into another night adrift and disabled.
