What happened?

My partner and I were climbing a technical rock route in the Palisades region in the High Sierra. The region is known for loose rock. I unintentionally pulled a large loose block off while climbing and took a large fall, injuring my head/neck and lower extremities. Due to my condition and our location on a remote rock climb, we were unable to self-evacuate. We activated the beacon. Initial attempts to pinpoint location of the beacon signal took longer than anticipated, so rescue was not possible on the day of the incident, and we spent the night on the ridge. I was retrieved the next morning approximately 18 hours after the incident by a CHP helicopter and Inyo County Search and Rescue volunteer.

Words of wisdom

Practice and prepare for the risks associated with your climb. Be realistic about what the hazards are and be prepared to mitigate them. It’s not helpful to ignore the risks associated with objectively risky activities.
