On July 17, 2026, my buddy and I went fishing around 40 miles off the coast of Holden Beach, North Carolina. What began as a day on the water became an offshore fishing emergency as conditions continued to worsen. The seas built throughout the day, and we soon faced a series of equipment failures that left us unable to get ourselves safely back to port.

Our power steering line ruptured, making it impossible to steer the boat. Soon after, our VHF radio failed as well. We tried using the trolling motor, but the increasing wind and seas quickly depleted its battery. That option failed too, leaving us without a workable way to control the boat or call for help by radio.

By around 3 p.m., we had exhausted the options available to us. We knew that a rescue would be easier during daylight, so we made the decision to activate our distress beacon. It was clear that we could not safely return to port on our own, and waiting longer could have made the situation more difficult.

The emergency beacon brought rescue help quickly. Within an hour, we had both a U.S. Coast Guard cutter and helicopter in sight. Seeing them arrive after the failures we had faced was an enormous relief.

The response showed the importance of carrying reliable emergency equipment when fishing offshore. We had lost steering, radio communication, and the backup option of the trolling motor. Once those systems failed, the beacon gave us a direct way to call for help.

I am incredibly grateful to the U.S. Coast Guard crews who responded to us that day. Their quick arrival made all the difference when we had no safe way to get ourselves home. Thank you to everyone involved in our rescue.
