What happened?

At 11:15 a.m., my colleague Morgan was hiking with her partner, carrying my personal locator beacon on the Kepler Track in Fiordland National Park. The weather had been spotty off and on throughout the last couple of days. She slipped when a small section of track gave way and landed awkwardly on her leg. Thankfully she had the PLB. She had obviously broken her leg and was unable to bear the weight and get out of Kepler Track. With bad weather once again approaching and being stuck on an exposed ridge. A decision to activate my personal locator beacon immediately was made. New Zealand Rescue Coordination Centre dispatched a local rescue helicopter and Morgan was lifted off the mountain and taken for medical treatment. She is currently awaiting surgery. The location was 25km from the nearest road and a 3 hour walk to nearest hut with no cellphone reception. So she would have been faced with a long and cold wait for rescue if there was no PLB.

Words of wisdom
