Hva skjedde?

I have previously activated my ACR PLB to help someone in need.

On the 29th of January, 2023, I came across a group of hikers in distress at Gertrude Saddle, Black Lake, in Fiordland National Park. One of their friends had slipped on wet rocks and tumbled down a steep section. The group was shaken and unsure how to help as the hiker lay motionless. Quickly assessing the situation, I took charge, calming the group and stabilizing the injured hiker. The remote location added urgency, and I knew we needed to act fast to get them the medical attention they required.

My climbing buddy and I quickly made our way to the injured hiker. When we arrived, he was sitting on a rock, conscious and alert, though clearly in pain. His injuries didn’t appear severe—no broken bones or deep cuts, just some swelling and bruising. He seemed to have a twisted ankle or sprain, but he was able to speak and stay calm. We reassured him and checked for any other hidden injuries. Thankfully, he was stable, and we did our best to keep him comfortable while waiting for help to arrive.

I took out my Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) and activated the distress signal. At the same time, we sent SOS messages via the Garmin Inreach to my emergency contact, who relayed the information to Search and Rescue (SAR) to initiate a response.

After about an hour, we heard the sound of a helicopter approaching through the mountains. The crew quickly located us and airlifted the injured hiker, who was then transported to the hospital in Invercargill. It was a huge relief knowing help had arrived.

Visdomsord

Lessons were learned. The main one being that having a PLB is so important.  I genuinely believed I’d never have to actually use it. I’m glad that I did to assist somebody in need.

Takk notat

Thank you ACR for the excellent device. And big thanks to Search and Rescue team for the amazing work they do in our backcountry.
