ACR 406 MHz Beacons Onboard in World Record Attempt

Contender Northeast Attempting Record Run from the Statue of Liberty to Bermuda

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL -- A new Contender 37 ST (Step Hull) with a crew of three will attempt to break a world record time in a run from the Statue of Liberty to Bermuda.

According to Contender Northeast officials, the attempt will be launched sometime between May 28th and June 7th, depending on weather and sea conditions.

As they begin their world record attempt, the team will have a guardian angel along for the journey. Cobham Life Support--ACR Products (, the world leader in safety and survival technologies, is aboard as the Official Electronic Safety Equipment supplier.

ACR has provisioned Captain Chuck Arnold of the "Big Dog Fishing Team", Eddie Winder, President of Win-Tron Electronics, and Les Stewart, VP Marketing for Contender Northeast, LLC with its latest generation 406 MHz EPIRB and PLB products, the GlobalFix™ iPRO EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) and AquaLink™ View PLB (Personal Locator Beacon).

Both of the beacons are equipped with ACR's industry-first digital display technology.

The 774-mile trip, which the trio hope to make in 19 hours or less (breaking the current record by more than 10 hours), is designed to demonstrate the high performance of the Contender 37 center console as well as its durability and reliability. The Contender 37 ST will be running triple 350 four-stroke Yamaha engines. Cruising speed is estimated to average 44 knots.

The trio, upon reaching their destination, plan to refuel, and to set another record run from Bermuda to Virginia Beach the next day (some 710 miles).

"When I was looking for an EPIRB as well as a PLB for Contender Northeast's world record breaking trip to Bermuda, I didn¹t want just any product," said Stewart. "I wanted a company with a reliable product that I could count on if my worst nightmare turned into a reality. When something goes wrong at sea, it's just you, your crew and your chosen survival equipment. ACR beacons have a reputation of working when all else has failed."

ACR EPIRBs and PLBs transmit signals on internationally recognized distress frequencies. NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) monitors the 406 MHz signal and the Search and Rescue Satellite-Aided Tracking System (COSPAS-SARSAT) detects and locates distress signals and forwards the information directly to the Coast Guard. GPS coordinates greatly assist search and rescue crews, and in the event GPS isn't acquired, position can be calculated through Doppler Shift as a reliable backup.

NOAA has reported that in 2009, COSPAS-SARSAT assisted in the rescue of 152 people in 61 incidents at sea. Worldwide, the COSPAS-SARSAT system is credited with rescuing more than 26,000 people since the program's inception in 1982. Of that number, more than 6,000 persons were rescued in the U.S.

An EPIRB/PLB is a satellite-signalling device of last resort, for use when all other means of self-rescue have been exhausted and where the situation is deemed to be grave and imminent, and the loss of life, limb, eyesight or valuable property will occur without assistance. All beacons must be registered online at following purchase.

There are no monthly service fees required for 406 MHz beacons, however, ACR has recently introduced a new non-distress subscription service 406Link (, which is available to virtually all 406 MHz beacons on the market.
