{"id":28388,"date":"2022-03-18T08:32:46","date_gmt":"2022-03-18T13:32:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.acrartex.com\/?post_type=survivor-stories&#038;p=28388"},"modified":"2022-03-18T08:32:47","modified_gmt":"2022-03-18T13:32:47","slug":"resqlink-ski-canada-overnight","status":"publish","type":"survivor-stories","link":"https:\/\/www.acrartex.com\/de\/survivor-stories\/resqlink-ski-canada-overnight\/","title":{"rendered":"ResQLink+ Helps Injured Skier on the Snowy Slopes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>My friend Brett and I set out to ski Banff&#8217;s Dolomite Circuit on March 14.\u00a0 We managed to complete the circuit, but the last couple of km were by helicopter, not skis.\u00a0 And it took a little longer than expected due to an unplanned overnight on the mountain.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a long story&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>I checked the weather and light snow was expected in the area.\u00a0 The initial ascent was pretty nice, with a little snow and some limited visibility, but still with nice views. Visibility got a lot worse after entering Dolomite Pass.\u00a0 Our hopes for nice views faded as the clouds and snow closed in to create a complete whiteout.\u00a0 I hoped we wouldn&#8217;t have to use the ResQLink+. Immediately I knew that I was in trouble.\u00a0I called out to Brett who was leading the way as he did for the entire trip.\u00a0 I was on my knees with one ski off and my right mitt supporting my left arm.\u00a0 Yes it hurt, hurt, hurt, a lot.\u00a0 The pain was bad but bearable when I supported the arm and didn&#8217;t move.\u00a0 Any movement would provoke a disabling spasm that left me gasping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Brett was a hero that night.\u00a0 He got out my ACR <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acrartex.com\/products\/resqlink-400\/\">ResQLink+<\/a> and activated it for a rescue.\u00a0 He helped me get my ski off and dug out a place for me to sit where I could hold my bad arm, got me into all my extra clothes, wrapped me in the reflective space blanket, and started a fire to keep me warm.\u00a0 With all of our clothes and the fire, we felt that we could wait out the night without worry of frostbite or hypothermia.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acrartex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Brett-ahead-of-Scott-1-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.acrartex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Brett-ahead-of-Scott-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28394\" width=\"256\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.acrartex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Brett-ahead-of-Scott-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.acrartex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Brett-ahead-of-Scott-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.acrartex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Brett-ahead-of-Scott-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.acrartex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Brett-ahead-of-Scott-1-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.acrartex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Brett-ahead-of-Scott-1-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.acrartex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Brett-ahead-of-Scott-1-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Brett at the Top of the Final Pass with Scott Trailing<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometime close to 1 am, we heard voices and saw distant lights shining our way.\u00a0 It was such a sweet moment to meet Parks Canada Safety Officers Ian and Aaron as they skied into our little encampment with their huge backpacks full of rescue gear.\u00a0 They made sure we were warm, covering me with even more warm clothes and a heated blanket, setting up a tent complete with sleeping bag and air mattress.\u00a0 And a gigantic bonfire.\u00a0 It was huge and it kept us all warm until dawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>At first light, a helicopter came to hoist us out of the forest.\u00a0 Brett got a great view as he was airlifted first.\u00a0 I got no view on the way out because they wrapped me up like a sausage roll in a thick plastic tarp with straps and buckles and attachments for hoisting.\u00a0 A brief ride brought me to the road where an ambulance was waiting with an IV and plenty of fentanyl.\u00a0 It was blessed relief when the doctors at the Banff hospital yanked my shoulder back into place.\u00a0I was very glad to have the ResQLink+ at my disposal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My friend Brett and I set out to ski Banff&#8217;s Dolomite Circuit on March 14.\u00a0 We managed to complete the circuit, but the last couple of km were by helicopter, not skis.\u00a0 And it took a little longer than expected due to an unplanned overnight on the mountain.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a long story&#8230;
